Stonescaping 101

As a fellow Drystone Practitioner who has worked with Jeff's firm on numerous projects, I felt compelled  to write and share some thoughts with Classic Stonescaping clients on the nature of the ancient craft of drystone masonry.

By simplest definition, drystone masonry is masonry whose structure is achieved without the aide of mortar; hence "dry".  It is known among practiced masons as "true masonry".  Though the explanation sounds simple enough, there are a number of engineering and architectural principle working harmoniously as well. Gravity and friction have not been improved upon since their advent.

To attest to its structural integrity, one only need behold the lasting prowess of the Egyptian pyramids.  Other civilizations throughout Europe and South America, most notably, showcase drystone builds that have endured for centuries. A wonderful modern, yet historically accurate drystone restoration exists right in the backyard of the Nation's Capital -- the massive drystone retaining wall on the historic C & O Canal located right at the the Georgetown Mall, and supporting the Francis Scott Key Pavilion by the F. Scott Key Bridge coming into Georgetown from Virginia.

However, don't think drystone builds have to be massive to be impressive, functional, or just down right spectacular to behold. Accent walls, sitting walls, lower retaining walls along with pond surrounds and water falls, stone stair cases, out door fireplaces and pits, and even dry laid patios enhance the private homeowners domain and speak of unsurpassed strength and durability.

Jeff's commitment to the craft is evident in his design and install philosophy -- drystone masonry is an integral component in achieving a unique and personalized hardscape environment. It's rewarding to know, that with properly crafted stonework, a legacy will be enjoyed by our great grand children's great grand children.
